2. Clear Course Goals: A necessity in supporting the 3 principles of UDL

Before working to apply the principles of UDL in your classroom, it is essential that you have a clear and concrete understanding of your course goals.

  • What are the essential learning outcomes of your course?
  • What skills and competencies will students be required to demonstrate at the end of the course? What knowledge will they be required to have in their heads?
  • What knowledge will they be required to know how to access?

A clear understanding of your goals will help you to decide what ways of presenting your content will be useful, what learning activities and supports would be helpful in supporting students to apply this knowledge, and what ways you will use to develop and maintain their interest and motivation in the course. As you work forward from these course goals, keep in mind what you know about the range of learners that will likely be in your class and the importance of providing multiple approaches in each of these areas.
