Introduction & Goals

This 30-minute introductory workshop is intended to provide you with resources and information to help you in supporting the learning of students with disabilities in the classroom. The topics we cover in this workshop will be expanded on in four subsequent lessons later on in the course.

At the end of this introductory workshop, you will:

  • Develop an understanding of students with disabilities at your institutions by hearing some of their stories
  • Experience what it could be like to have a disability
  • Identify current approaches to creating welcoming and inclusive classrooms at post-secondary institutions that support students with disabilities’ full participation in your learning communities
  • Recognize the reason for providing reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities
  • Access practical tools that you can use to improve inclusion and accessibility in your classroom for students with disabilities
  • Identify five quick strategies that can be helpful in fostering respectful and affirming interactions with students with disabilities
  • Select what you would like to learn more about and to ask questions
